She was referring to her battle round match against Halle Tomlinson on Season 11 of The Voice.
Unfortunately, fans of the show didn’t get to see the fun. The battle was montaged, meaning viewers got just a quick glimpse of it.
But Alicia Keys declared Belle the winner, meaning she advances to the knockout round, which starts Monday night. Halle was eliminated.
Alicia had Belle and Halle sing Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets.” You can check out the studio version of their unique cover of the song above.
“You hear it a lot,” Belle said of the song, “and you don’t hear many different things done with it. So Halle and I really wanted to add our own twist to it and I am just really glad that we got to do that. It was a blast.”
Belle said the coaches complimented her on being able to show her individuality not only through her vocals, but also through
her stage presence and performance style.
“That meant a lot to me because it was something that I was working on a lot and Alicia told me she wanted to see from me,” Belle said during a conference call with the media.
In fact, it’s a point Alicia has stressed to Belle and advice she says she’ll use throughout the competition and in performances following The Voice.
“She (Alicia) told me to be just the loudest version of myself,” Belle said. “And to just be me unapologetically and always express who I am at my fullest capacity. That’s something I will always carry with me.”
Belle, who was 18 when she auditioned for The Voice, landed a spot on the show by singing “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” in the blind auditions; that performance was also montaged. You can learn more about Belle and her pre-show music here.
Halle, also 18 when she auditioned, performed “New York State of Mind” in the blind auditions and turned two chairs. Head here for a profile of Halle.
