The Voice montaged both his battle round and knockout performances, meaning Calvin was on the screen for just a few seconds each time.
But the 25-year-old from Nashville, who grew up singing in church, certainly made an impression in the blind audition.
Calvin turned three chairs with his cover of “Just My Imaginaton” by the Temptations in what Voice coach John Legend called a “masterful” performance.
Here’s what Calvin told Voice Views about his time on the show and his plans moving forward.
Voice Views: What do you consider your biggest takeaway / lesson learned from The Voice experience?
Calvin: The greatest lesson I learned on the show would have to be to remain confident in myself. I made it as far as I did for a reason. I worked hard for it, and I deserved it. And even though there’s always more to learn, I can humbly say that I’m good at what I do. I don’t always believe that. But being on this show taught me to start believing that truth more.
Voice Views: Can you tell me a little about the knockout round match since it wasn’t aired? What did you sing? What type of feedback did you get? What did fans miss?
Calvin: My knockout song was “You’ll Be In My Heart” by Phil Collins. One of my favorite songs from my childhood. I really wanted to have the opportunity to share that with all of you, because it means so much to me. Kelly (Clarkson) really loved my performance, John said it was good that I showed my range. I know Gwen (Stefani) wanted me to emote more in my performance, which was solid advice that I can take back and perfect. All in all, I was proud of myself and my performance.
Voice Views: The battles and knockouts were filmed over the summer. What have you been doing musically since then and where are you hoping The Voice experience leads?
Calvin: So, I’ve been performing a lot more. Doing a lot of live shows here in my North Carolina, and even back home in Nashville. Doing a lot of writing, I picked up the guitar again. And really working on my music.
Voice Views: Do you plan to release new music anytime soon? If so, can you tell me about that — what you’re planning, what fans can expert in terms of sound and the timetable for doing?
Calvin: Yes! So, I’m in the studio and in the recording process now. I’m not sure if I’m releasing an EP or a whole project just yet, but I’m working. A song at a time. I’m planning on dropping a single by the end of the year, or top of next year. So, music is coming sooner than I even think!
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about The Voice experience?
Calvin: I’m just super humbled and grateful that I was given this opportunity. Beyond how things played out, I’ll always come back and be grateful to God and everyone that’s supported me this far. We’re only getting started! The journey starts now.
