The minute Cam Spinks started his blind audition on The Voice, all eyes in those big red chairs turned to Blake Shelton.

After all, there weren’t a lot of country singers — especially male country singers — at the Voice Season 18 blind auditions.

But here was one, and Cam was doing a fine job covering Pat Green’s “Wave on Wave.”

Sure enough, Blake turned midway through the song. And while Kelly Clarkson turned late in the performance, Cam opted to join Team Blake.

Here’s what Cam, 29, from Alabaster, Ala., told Voice Views about the blind audition experience.

Voice Views: How did you wind up auditioning for The Voice Season 18 and what prompted you to do it?

Cam: I received an email from a talent scout for the show. I was skeptical at first, but ultimately decided to go for it and drive over to Atlanta for the initial audition.

Voice Views: Why did you choose “Wave on Wave” for your audition song? What’s your performance history with that song (for instance, is it one you’ve played often)?

Cam: I’ve been gigging that song for a long time. It’s one of those songs that really fits me as a country artist. It’s right in my lane. I’ve always been a big fan of Pat and the entire Texas country movement.

Voice Views: Did you have a coaching preference heading into the blind audition? Why did you decide to go with Blake as your coach?

Cam: Yes, my preference was definitely Blake. Obviously, we share the same genre, but he also has a very successful track record on the show. So he was my first choice.

Voice Views: What was that blind audition experience like? Some contestants say they’re aware of the coaches; others say they try to ignore them and focus on their performance. How was it with you and were you aware when Blake turned?

Cam: The blind audition was pretty cool. I won’t lie, I felt some nerves, which was unexpected for me. But I just took a deep breath, settled in (even chuckled a bit before I started singing), and did my thing. When Blake turned, I felt a sense of relief and the rest of the song was a bit more powerful as a result.

Voice Views: How would you describe your original music and what are you hoping to accomplish during your time on The Voice?

Cam: My original music is country, lyrically and sonically. No denying it. It flirts with the line between commercial country music and alternative country music. As I mentioned before, I’m a huge red dirt/Texas country music fan. So I have a tendency to try and fit a lot my songs into that particular category. There are some outliers though. I’m not afraid to jump out of the box musically.
