Note: This is the live blog posted Wednesday night, following former Idol contestants at the People’s Choice Awards. Scroll down for the photo gallery. A complete list of winners appears at the end of the blog.
Wow, these awards shows just keep getting more unpredictable.
First, there was Adam Lambert’s over-the-top version of “For Your Entertainment” at the American Music Awards; then Mariah Carey’s rather tipsy acceptance speech at this week’s palm Springs International Film Festival.
If you haven’t seen Mariah accepting the Breakthrough Artist Award, you should. Here’s the link.
Meanwhile, a Web site has posted some of the Complaints filed with FCC over Adam’s performance at the AMAs.
But tonight the focus is on the People’s Choice Awards, though it should be noted that Adam and Mariah are among the nominees.
I’ll be posting photos throughout the show.
And look at that, right off the bat new Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres gets her 11th award for Best Talk Show host.
For those who have lost track — because lots of Idols are up for awards tonight — here’s a rundown of those nominations.
* Carrie Underwood as Favorite Female Artist, up against Beyonce, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift and Pink. Prediction: The award will go to Beyonce or Taylor.
* Carrie Underwood as Favorite Country Artist, up against Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swift. Prediction. Brad or Taylor wins. Get used to it. Taylor’s going to win a lot of awards in 2010 that used to go to Carrie.
* Jennifer Hudson as Favorite R&B Artist, up against Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Usher, Mariah Carey. Prediction: Beyonce or Mariah wins.
* Daughtry as Favorite Rock Band, up against Green Day, Kings of Leon, Muse and Paramore. Prediction: Kings of Leon win.
* Adam Lambert and Kris Allen for Favorite Breakout Artist, up against Lady Gaga, Susan Boyle and Demi Lovato.
* American Idol as Favorite Competition Show, up against Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, Survivor: Samoa and Project Runway. Prediction: Anyone but Idol, which botched its format for season eight.
And look at that, Mariah wins another award, as Favorite R&B Artist. Well, she appears to be in better shape tonight, even if she is wearing a dress she can’t walk in. Well, that’s one award an Idol missed out on. Jennifer Hudson was nominated in that category.
Now, it’s time for the Favorite Country Artist award. And the honor goes to Carrie Underwood. Wow, surprise. Thought for sure Taylor Swift would win.
But Carrie is denied a second award. The honor for Favorite Female Artist goes to — there she is — Taylor Swift.
Hmm, this awards telecast has as many in-show commercials as an episode of American Idol, doesn’t it?
So, the show ended, and we still don’t know who won Favorite Competition Show, Favorite Breakthrough Artist or Favorite Rock Star.
I’ll let you know who won those as soon as I can track down the information.
And I’m a little disappointed more Idols didn’t turn out for the show. Heck, not even Adam Lambert, who to this point hasn’t been able to resist an awards show red carpet appearance.
Hark, the rest of the results are in: American Idol won for Favorite TV Show Competition.
But Idols failed to win in the other two suspense-filled categories. Paramore was Favorite Rock Band; Lady Gaga (deservingly) was Favorite Breakthrough Arist. She also won the award for Favorite Pop Star.
I’ll put the complete list of winners at the bottom of the blog … after the photos.
