Editor’s Note: As Season 10 kicks off, let’s catch up with some of the contestants we met at this time a year ago.
You know, I’m convinced Idol would be so much better if I could just hand-pick which contestants advance from the semifinals.
If so, we would have heard more from Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott in Season 9. The Season 8 cast would have been dramatically different. And a guy named Tim Halperin would have been competing in the finals a year ago.
As it was, Tim made the semifinals, but wasn’t voted into the finals by fans. And, in a decision that baffles me to this day, he was not among the three guys selected to compete for a wild card spot.
I mean, he’s a singer-songwriter in the mold of Season 8 winner Kris Allen and Season 9 winner Lee DeWyze. Except that I was even more impressed by Tim’s pre-Idol music (check out “She Runs” here).
Well, Tim didn’t exactly fold up his tent musically post-Idol.
On Sept. 27, he released a creative video for a tune called the “Last Song.”
It wasn’t the last song, of course. Because on the same day he released an acoustic six-track EP that includes covers of “Rolling in the Deep” and “When a Man Loves a Woman.” Plus an album of 13 Tim Halperin originals called “Rise and Fall.”
All are available on iTunes. I’ve embedded the video for “The Last Song” below along with two of my favorite tracks from the album, “Pretty Girls” and “I Gotta Know.” The latter … wow, great song.
If you want to follow what Tim’s up to, well, he blogs frequently here. On Monday, he was pondering the growing popularity of boy bands.
Better yet, about a week ago, he offered a free download of some of his music. After all, he said he realizes lots of music fans are “broke.”
“I want to give you some of the songs from Rise and Fall,” he says in a video, “because I think, once you hear a few of the songs, if you can’t afford to buy it, you’ll share the music with your friends, who are rich, and can afford to buy it. And they’ll probably buy you a copy, too.”
Tim has a number of concert dates lined up for 2012, including a Jan. 28 show in Fort Worth, Texas, where he’ll be opening for LeAnn Rimes at the Komen for the Cure 20th Anniversary Concert. You can follow his show dates here.
In the meantime, enjoy some post-Idol music from a guy who should have been in last year’s finals.

I totally agree — Tim was so much better than most of the contestants that made it through last year. The show concentrated most of its pre-voting airtime to the contestants that made it through — so by the time voting time came, everyone already knew Scotty and Lauren, and all the others and had only seen seconds of Tim. Pretty unfair deal — it’s just like the politicians who canvas: they know that people vote for the names they hear most. That’s the simple truth.
