Tim Halperin, 23, Omaha, Neb. (Michael Becker / FOX Photo)Tim Halperin just sent out a tweet offering a free download of a new song, called “The Last Song.”

But clearly, it won’t be the last song for Tim.

Because the tweet also indicates that he plans to release a CD in September.

That hardly surprises me. In a radio interview I heard Tim do, he was talking of releasing a CD even before this year’s season of American Idol began.

Tim, of course, was eliminated from the show in last week’s semifinals.

His Tuesday night performance of Rob Thomas’ “Streetcorner Serenade” didn’t go over very well with the judges.

And after he failed to finish in the top five among male vote-getters, he was also passed over by the judges, who decided he wouldn’t be one of the three guys to get a chance to sing for a wild-card spot.

It was a disappointing end to the 23-year-old Fort Worth resident’s Idol journey.

Just a week earlier, viewers had watched him sparkle on stage in a duet of the Beatles “Something in the Way” with Julie Zorrilla.

And, given Idol viewers’ propensity to fall for good-looking male singer-songwriters, it wasn’t difficult envisioning Tim going deep into the Idol finals.

In his Idol video, Tim said his musical career really started at Texas Christian University, when he started writing his own music.

A couple of weeks back, I featured one of those originals, “She Runs,” as the Idol Chatter song of the day. You can go here to listen to it, or download it as a podcast from iTunes for free.

iTunes also has a free podcast of Tim covering the Miley Cyrus hit, “Party in the USA.” I guarantee it sounds less screechy with Tim singing it.

And a song Tim wrote to benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure is available for download from other sites. It’s called “We Fight Back.”

Meanwhile, to claim that free download of “The Last Song,” go here.

Here’s the song you’ll be getting …
