After watching a four-chair turn recipient (Justin Kilgore) leave the competition Monday night, Terrence Cunningham and Pryor Baird made sure they didn’t fall victim to the same fate.
The youngest contestant on the show — Bryan Cartelli — also advanced.
And the knockout round save came into play again. This time, the beneficiary was Christiana Danielle.
If you’re keeping score at home, that means Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Alicia Keys have already used their save, leaving only Kelly Clarkson with a save left when the knockouts resume next Monday night.
Here’s my recap of Tuesday’s show.
WHERE WAS THE STEAL / SAVE?
TEAM KELLY
The matchup: Brynn Cartelli versus Jamella
The songs: Brynn — “Here Comes Goodbye” by Rascal Flatts; Jamella — “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town.
The background: Brynn turned two chairs in the blinds, then won her highly successful battle round match with Dylan Hartigan. We have seen Jamella sing yet because both of her performances were montaged. She turned two chairs in the blinds, then won a battle with Teana Boston.
The performance: First off, it’s about time we got to hear Jamella. The good news for her is that was a heck of an introduction. She looked like a star. More importantly, she deserves major kudos for making that song her own and for making it work. The bad news: She was up against Brynn, the youngest singer in the competition, who delivered one of the more powerful vocals we’ve heard so far in Season 14. I mean, dang. And she was 14 when she auditioned? Now way Kelly could cut her loose after that stellar performance. But where was the steal / save for Jamella?
The outcome: Kelly advanced Brynn. No surprise there. Jamella was eliminated.
THE COACH GOT IT RIGHT
TEAM BLAKE
The matchup: Pryor Baird versus Jaron Strom
The songs: Pryor — “Will it Go Round in Circles” by Billy Preston; Jaron — “Grenade” by Bruno Mars.
The background: Pryor turned four chairs in the blind audition, then won his battle round match with playoff-bound Kaleb Lee. Jaron turned just Blake’s chair in the blinds, but won his subsequent battle round match with Bransen Ireland.
The performance: I wasn’t crazy about Pryor’s song choice, but it’s hard to criticize the execution. Like the lyrics indicated, he was letting the song move him. He also delivered a big ending. Jaron, meanwhile, had a potential crowd-pleasing song choice, but I think his nerves got the better of him. He was clearly the underdog heading into this match, and I have to wonder if that got to him just a bit.
The outcome: Blake declares Pryor the winner; Jaron was eliminated.
ANOTHER KNOCKOUT ROUND SAVE
TEAM ALICIA KEYS
The matchup: Terrence Cunningham versus Christiana Danielle
The songs: Terrence — “Tell Me Something Good” by Chaka Khan; Christina — “Elastic Heart” by Sia
The background: Terrence turned all four chairs in the blinds, then won his battle round match with Livia Faith; Christiana turned three chairs in the blinds, then won her battle with Shana Halligan.
The performance: Terrence has clearly become a show favorite and there was no way Alicia was going to let him go anywhere. He certainly showed off his range, but that performance was a bit too screechy for my liking. Nor was I crazy about Christiana’s reworking of “Elastic Heart.” That said, she sounded very strong vocally, especially over the last 45 seconds or so when the song swelled. For that reason, I was glad to see her stay on the show.
The outcome: Alicia proclaims Terrence the winner. Christiana? Alicia immediately pushes her save button; Kelly pushes her steal button. And as Kelly starts her pitch, Adam pushes his steal button too. Christiana decides to stay with Team Alicia.
