CMA nominations for Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson

The two most successful American Idols have been nominated for honors at the 45th annual County Music Association (CMA) Awards, set for Nov. 9.

Carrie Underwood, of course, is an annual nominee — not to mention co-host — of the event. This year, she’s nominated again, as top female vocalist.

The bigger news is the two nominations for the original Idol, Kelly Clarkson, thanks to her “Don’t You Want to Stay” duet with Jason Alden.

Their performance on last year’s CMA Awards is nominated as musical event of the year. The former number one song on Billboard’s country chart is also nominated as single of the year.

Carrie has five CMA awards to her credit, including a run of three straight Female Vocalist of the Year awards. But she’s been shut out at the CMAs the last two years, including for the female vocalist and album of the year honors in 2010.

The awards show will be broadcast on CBS at 8 p.m. Hosting along with Carrie will be Brad Paisley, who was named Entertainer of the Year in 2010 and is up for that award again.

You can go here for the complete list of nominees, but here’s the competition in the categories in which Carrie and Kelly are nominated.

Female Vocalist of the Year: Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, Sara Evans, Martina McBride. My take: The award should go to Taylor Swift, who’s “Speak Now” was released more released by the last new solo album from Miranda or Carrie. If Taylor doesn’t win, the award should go to Miranda.

Single of the Year: “Don’t You Want to Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson; “A Little Bit Stronger” by Sara Evans; “Cold Weather” by the Zac Brown Band; “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry; “Honey Bee” by Blake Shelton. My take: The award should go to The Band Perry and “If I Die Young.”

Musical Event of the Year: “Don’t You Want to Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson; “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Sheryl Crow; “As She’s Walking Away” by the Zac Brown Band and Alan Jackson; “Old Alabama” by Brad Paisley and Alabama; “You and Tequila” by Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter. My take: How can the award not to go “Coal Miner’s Daughter?”

Now, here’s a look at that performance by Jason and Kelly from last year’s awards show.

Taylor Swift has no business winning a vocalist award. She can’t sing. The country music world had serious morning after regret the last time she won at the CMAs so hopefully they won’t repeat that mistake. It’s really obvious the only reason the country industry has maintained ties to her is because of money. You should see the lengths to which her label’s gone to manipulate Mediabase #1 hits for her. Massive 1 week pushes that fail to achieve Billboard #1 only to see the bottom fall out completely from her songs after she squeaks out a #1 for 1 day on the Mediabase chart.

But since the awards lately have been all about who campaigns the hardest and who has their label’s support, it’ll be between Taylor, Miranda, and Sara. Sara’s got the comeback story. Miranda has a new album coming out the week before the CMAs. Taylor’s team is hellbent on getting her awards. I say Miranda’ll probably win.

I think you’re right about who’ll win Single Of The Year but wrong about who’ll win Vocal
Event Of The Year. Kelly’s manager is married to Reba and also the manager of Blake Shelton who’s been a huge political beneficiary of awards show campaigning lately.

The CMAs aren’t just going to award a legend because she’s a legend. Zac Brown Band with Alan Jackson and Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter have better songs than Don’t You Wanna Stay with better performances. But Jason’s had a huge year, DYWS crossed over, and Blake Shelton’s manager will help this award go to Jason and Kelly.
