To viewers of The Voice, the outcome of the battle round match between Dallas Caroline and Spensha Baker was obvious.
Their match was the last one aired. Alicia Keys had one steal remaining. It was clear that both singers would advance, one via a steal.
It wasn’t so obvious to Dallas or Spensha. After all, the order in which viewers see the matches isn’t necessarily the order in which they are filmed.
“We really didn’t know much going in about steals or anything,” Dallas said in a conference call with the media. “So we just gave our best performance.”
Coach Blake Shelton had them perform “I Could Use a Love Song” by Maren Morris. He opted to advance Spensha, a child star as a gospel singer who’s hoping to launch a country career.
Alicia promptly swooped in and stole Dallas, a promising teen from Santa Rosa, Calif.
“I’m really excited to work with Alicia,” said Dallas. “I am a country singer; that’s why I went with Blake to begin with. I think I learned a lot from him. I’m excited to see what I can learn from Alicia too. I mean, music is music.”
Dallas said she wants to focus on controlling her nerves in future performances and wants to “show Alicia she made the right choice by stealing me.”
Spensha received high praise from Blake during the feedback portion of the battle round. He said she has the potential to “blow the mind of Nashville and turn the country music industry on its ear.”
Said Spansha: “I sing country, but my voice has a soulful aspect to it. I think we can hear a little more of that on country radio right now. In terms of musical direction, that’s kind of the lane I would fit into. More of the Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, etc.
“To me, the reason that (comment) meant a lot is this is a new genre for me. I’m still finding my footing. It shows me how much (Blake) truly believes in me.”
Viewers will see Dallas and Spensha again in the knockout round, which begins airing Monday on The Voice. Winners advance to the live playoffs.
