Expect “bigger and bolder” from DaNica Shirey when the Top 10 take the stage on The Voice Monday night.

Like other contestants, DaNica is prohibited from saying what song she’ll be singing as she competes for a spot on the show’s Top 8.

But she can talk about it in general terms.

“I’m doing a very, very hard, very big song,” she said late last week. “I’m keeping fingers crossed, practicing my butt off and hopefully everyone will enjoy it as much as I enjoy doing this song.

“I love this song. It’s (by) somebody I’ve looked up to my whole life.”

DaNica said she suggested the song to coach Pharrell Williams immediately after last week’s results show, and he quickly bought into the idea.

“His advice is, ‘We want you to do songs that, when people see you physically standing there, they’re going to say, ‘Oh, right, she can’t sing this song.’ He wants me to sing songs that will shock people, that by looking at me, they’re not going to think that is coming out of me. I wanted to fall back in that direction again.”

Of course, she’ll be taking the stage knowing that, back home, her fans are gathered at the Pullo Center on the Penn State York campus for a special viewing party being held in her honor. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the free event, being organized in part by her former manager Holly Gumke.

When I spoke to DaNica last Thursday, she was about to film a special thank you to fans that will be shown at the watch party.

“That gives me chills,” she said of the viewing party. “That’s the most amazing thing to me.”

Her fans have been dubbed the DaNeekers. Hey, it might not roll off the tongue like the Wolpack that was supporting Lancaster’s James Wolpert back on Season 5 of The Voice, DaNica admits with a laugh. But it was suggested by DJ Dennis Mitchell when DaNica was a guest on the Breakfast Club at 101 The Rose radio station earlier this year. And it stuck.

“What’s funny is my friends call me Neekers and DaNeekers, back at home. I said, ‘That’s actually cute. I wouldn’t mind that.’ Somebody tweeted and used it, so i just went with it.

“I’m so happy and feel so blessed, and I’m so thankful for every single person who is helping me,” DaNica added. “They’re making it so much fun for me. I cannot wait until I can come home and actually sing live for them.”

Of course, her fans won’t mind one little bit if that doesn’t happen for a while. After all, The Voice Season 7 runs through mid-December.

DaNica returns to The Voice stage Monday night during the 8 p.m. Top 10 show on NBC. A free watch party is being held at The Pullo Center, 1031 Edgecomb Ave., on the Penn State York campus. Doors open at 7 p.m. If you can’t be there, follow along with my live blog, complete with song by song grades as each performance occurs.
