Darius Scott relied on an old favorite to advance to the live playoffs on The Voice.

Morgan Frazier survived as well, with the help of an old friend.

Darius, a gospel singer, and Morgan, an aspiring country artist, were pitted against one another in a Team Pharrell knockout round match this week on The Voice.

Darius went first, performing a version of the classic hit “On Broadway” that left the coaches singing praises about his vocal prowess.

Morgan followed with “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” by the Eli Young Band, delivering glory note after glory note as the song drew to a finish.

The coaches complimented her performance as well. But only one singer could advance to the live playoffs as a member of Team Pharrell.

And Pharrell Williams declared Darius the winner.

“‘On Broadway’ is something that I’ve been singing for years,” Darius said this week during a conference call with the media. “Never like this — never in front of an audience that big — but it’s a song that has been in my wheelhouse for a long time. It’s actually one of my favorite songs.

“So it was cool to have something I was a little more comfortable with given the circumstances of the (knockout) round. That’s already enough pressure, having to sing against anyone, let alone someone that you really like and respect as a performer. So having a comfortable song was a great, great thing for me.”

Not that Morgan was about to complain about the outcome. In fact, she admits to “freaking out a little bit” when she arrived on stage and realized Darius was the Team Pharrell member she’d be singing against.

“Then I watched him sing and … I don’t know, it just really pumped me up. So I got up there and gave it everything I had, but there was no doubt in my mind that he was winning. Like I just knew it. He just freaking killed it, you know?”

At that point, Morgan said she realized she had one hope, and it was in the hands of her old coach on The Voice, Blake Shelton. She admits to “just hoping and praying Blake would steal me.”

That’s exactly what happened, as Blake reacquired the 22-year-old from Nashville he’d let slip away in the battle round.

“Oh my gosh, my heart just basically blew up,” Morgan said, recalling her reaction. “I love Pharrell and I loved all the time that I had with him, and I learned so much in a very short time about me and who I am. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything. But I did miss being on Team Blake and I was just so happy when he pressed that button.”

The results: Both Morgan and Darius will be singing for Voice viewers’ votes — this time on different teams — when the live playoffs begin in a couple of weeks.
