If you’re a fan of David Cook, you owe it to yourself to watch an extensive interview posted late last week from The Hollywood Reporter’s Idol Hangover show.
During the course of the interview, David talks about moving to Nashville, his parting of ways with RCA, his plans moving forward and the white-guy-with-guitar phenomenon American Idol.
David Cook was the first WGWG to win American Idol. It’s happened every year since. And it could happen again this year with guitar-strumming Phillip Phillips among the top 3 who will take the stage tonight.
“I lot of times when you hear the term (WGWG) anymore, it has a negative connotation, which really bugs the hell out of me,” David said.
He pointed out that he and the last three winners of Idol — Kris Allen, Scotty McCreery and Kris Allen — are all white guys who played guitar, but who fall into at least slightly different genres of music.
Before dismissing Phillip Phillips as just another WGWG, David suggested giving him the benefit of the doubt. “Let the music be what it’s going to be before you lump him into that pile,” the Season 7 Idol advised.
David sounded upbeat about life after losing his recording contract with RCA and said that, no, his new single, “The Last Song I’ll Write for You,” wasn’t written with his former record company in mind. It just happens to be a breakup song that came together very quickly.
And it sounds like we’ll be hearing more music from David, record company or not, and perhaps music a bit different than what we’ve heard before.
“I don’t ever want to put the same record out twice,” he said. “Playing it safe never got anybody anywhere.”
Check out the full interview here. If you’re a David Cook fan, it’s definitely worth the time.
