During a conference call last week, E.G. Daily and Ashley Dubrose talked about the lost battles on The Voice.
And by lost battles, I mean the ones we barely saw.
E.G., the actress and voice-over specialist from Team Blake, was paired up with Sam Cerniglia and asked to perform Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About.”
It made for an odd pairing, E.G. admitted. She’s more of a country/rock singer, at least lately. Sam is more of a Michael Buble type singer.
So how did they wind up performing together?
“Blake had said this in rehearsal — ‘Well, we sort of went down the list and we were matching people up and at the end of the list, there we were with Sam and E.G.’ So we called ourselves the fate pick.”
Fate worked out well for E.G., who won the round. Not so well for Sam, who lost and did not get stolen.
E.G. said the song was more suited toward her style, “but (Sam) did an amazing job with it, and I think that’s what some of the comments were — was that he really challenged himself. And I really had to fight with him because it wasn’t easy at all.”
Over on Team Adam, Ashley was matched up with country singer Justin Blake. They were asked to perform “Just a Fool,” a duet Christina Aguilera did with Blake Shelton for her “Lotus” album.
So Ashley had a dose of double pressure to deal with — proving she was worthy of the four-chair turn-around she received for her blind audition and tackling that song with the two coaches who recorded it looking on.
“I was struggling with the highs (high notes),” Ashley said during the conference call. “Christina Aguilera’s a powerhouse so she’s belting those notes out. And so those notes were a challenge for me.
“And for Justin, on the other hand, he was working on his harmony. That was a challenge for him because obviously he had not done a lot with harmonizing in the past. So those were like our two areas to work on for each of us.”
Ashley complimented Justin on being “a wonderful singer” and for his charm and humor and said the two had become friends on Team Adam even before learning they’d have to battle one another.“And I think, in our stage performance, I think it really came out that we were comfortable with each other. … Everyone gave Justin really good feedback and I was actually worried that this was going to be the underdog story where the one-chair turner (beats) the four-chair turner. I was getting my thank-you speech ready because I wasn’t expecting to win.”
“Not that I didn’t feel I did a good job,” Ashley added. “I thought I did a great job, but so did Justin. I really wish that America could have seen our performance to see what went down.”
Unfortunately, on The Voice, we don’t get to see every battle round. And, unfortunately, Cole Vosbury didn’t participate in the conference call to explain what happened in the battle round match he won with Lupe Carroll.

And check back Monday and Tuesday night for live blogging as the battle rounds on The Voice continue.
