Melinda Doolittle’s new single will be out Tuesday.

As far as I can tell, it’s the first original music Melinda has released since her solid and under-rated debut album — “Coming Back to You” — in February 2009.

Earlier this year, she provided vocals for an album called “Lift Every Voice,” which includes 30 songs written by early civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson.

In a blog on her website, Melinda writes that “Never Giving Up” resulted from a song-writing session she went into with the intent of writing “a really upbeat, sassy song.”

She wound up writing the song about the most difficult obstacle she’s faced in the past seven years, “dealing with all the awful things people said about me as a person” after American Idol, ranging from comments about her looks to her personality.

For those who don’t remember, Melinda was a former background singer when she showed up on our TV screens. Her remarkable vocals made her one of the early favorites back in Season 6. She wound up finishing third, just missing a finals that featured Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.

Anyway, Melinda writes that she eventually came to the conclusion that what she believed about herself mattered more than what anyone else said about her.

“That’s what ‘Never Giving Up’ is about,” Melinda writes. “Even when life takes a different path than I could have ever imagined, I will always be a big dreamer and I won’t give up until it happens. That song focuses on love, but it’s really about life. It about knowing myself and what I’m capable of and not letting anything make me stop the fight.”

“Never Giving Up” should hit iTunes Tuesday. That’s the cover art above.
