Catie Turner’s elimination Sunday leaves Gabby Barrett as American Idol’s undisputed social media champion.

But it’s also a reminder than social media support doesn’t necessarily guarantee success on the show.

Before failing to advance Sunday, Catie was the show’s social media leader on Instagram and Twitter.

Her departure leaves Gabby in that position, by a very wide margin.

Not that other contestants aren’t gaining in popularity as well.

Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson, in particular, enjoyed great weeks on social media. Maddie gained more Twitter followers than anyone in the Top 5.

Meanwhile, Michael J. Woodard is likely hoping there’s not a direct correlation between social media popularity and fan voting. He ranks fifth among the Top 5 on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
