Blosil described herself as “quirky” during her pre-audition interview on American Idol.

And she came off as so quirky, you had to wonder whether we were being led into one of Idol’s joke auditions.

It was no joke. That became clear when Jenn settled behind the piano and delivered a stripped-down version of Imagine Dragons “Radioactive” that ranked as the artistic highlight of the third audition episode.

Jennifer Lopez called the performance “very interesting” and “compelling.” Keith Urban said Jenn has a “good story-telling quality to her voice.”

And just like that, Ms. Quirky breezed to the Hollywood round via a 3-0 vote.

Turns out the 23-year-old, identified as a child care worker in Brooklyn, N.Y., has been singing for quite a while, mostly in the Provo, Utah, area.

In a video series featuring up-and-coming artists on the Provo music scene, Jenn said she’s been singing as long as she can remember, then started playing piano and begged her mom to enroll her in lessons.

“All my siblings were like, ‘You’ll hate it. It’s the worst. Don’t do it,'” Jenn says in an interview you can watch here.

But she did — and wound up hating it. Until she discovered the music of Alicia Keys, who sang and played piano. That convinced her that song-writing and playing piano could be happy partners.

Her interest in singing turned more serious in high school when her sister took her to an open mic night at the Velour Live Music Gallery in Provo. Jenn did so well, she was headlining shows by her third appearance.

Her resume also includes missionary work with the Church of Latter Day Saints and a five-track self-titled EP she released in 2013.

“Serving a mission is the best decision I’ve made,” Jenn says in the aforementioned interview. “It’s affected my music because I came home with a greater desire to be honest and authentic. Subconsciously, there’s this desire to be more awesome.”

You can follow Jenn through her website and on Facebook. On Twitter, she has just started tweeting as @jennblosil.
