If likeability counts for much on American Idol, this guy should go far.
We were introduced to Nate Tao during American Idol’s Oklahoma City audition episode.
You might recall him as the guy who was trying to teach Ryan a little sign language.
The 24-year-old from Reston, Va, is a sign language teacher, an occupation born from his background.
Both of Nate’s parents are deaf. In fact, he jokes that they were skeptical of his interest in singing. After all, how would they know if he’s really talented?
He figured a golden ticket to Hollywood would help provide proof.
The golden ticket was a snap after the judges heard his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life.”
Nicki Minaj complimented him on his “charisma” and for having “a really nice unique tone” to his voice. The judges voted unanimously to send him to Hollywood.
You can hear more of Nate below, including one video in which he performs that audition song with the a cappella group Aca Funx.

LOVE LOVE LOVE Nate Tao!!!!! I’ve been following this dude for a few years now. I actually discovered him because of AI………. remember the man who sang “Pants On The Ground”? And then there were videos of all kinds of people covering that song and AI showed some of them on the air. Ithacapella from Ithaca College was one of those groups they showed so I looked them up and watched some of their other videos and fell in love with Nate Tao! He released a five song EP. He was also in the acapella group Hyannis Sound a few years ago with Tyler Trepp from Straight No Chaser. (By the way – Straight No Chaser will be at Strand Capitol Theatre in York on May 10th. GO SEE THEM!!)
