One of my fellow York Dispatch bloggers — Andy Shaw, who can tell you anything you ever wanted to know about “America’s Next Top Model” — pointed out something about last night’s Idol show that I didn’t realize, watching it live.
The show ran late, about five minutes late. Meaning anyone who watched the show via TiVo or DVR missed Adam Lambert’s performance. I checked out the DVR version I recorded while watching live and, indeed, Adam’s entire performance was missing.
And if you missed that performance, you missed the top performance of the night. I mean, Simon Cowell gave him a standing ovation.
How often does that happen?
I knew Idol would have trouble squeezing eight singers into a one-hour show. I still think four judges is one too many, Idol.
Tonight, we get results and a special performance from one of my all-time favorite Idol contestants, Kellie Pickler. That gal’s just so likeable.
Make sure to check out what’s on her feet. She blogged over the weekend about buying a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes that were sent from heaven, only to discover it didn’t match the dress she planned to wear tonight.
But first, we hear from Frankie Avalon, singing “Venus,” from the year of Simon’s birth. And we just found out Simon will turn 50 later this year.
They’re making us wait longer than usual tonight for results. But at least we now know what Danny Gokey would look like he ever joined a Kiss tribute group.
Now, we are down to the results.
Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Anoop Desai are the first three up to get results.
Adam is safe.
Kris is safe.
Anoop is in the bottom three.
OK, the results for Kris and Anoop are backward, if judged on last night alone. But judging on the five finals performances to date, I’d say voters got it right. Anoop has been wildly inconsistent; Kris had been improving each week prior to Tuesday’s jazz-filled “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” dud.
Results interrupted. Next we hear from Flo Rida. Don’t know who his lead female singer is, but she’s got a heck of a voice. Wow. Just checked out Wikipedia. Flo Rida’s version of “Right Round” was downloaded more than 600,000 times … in one week. Sounds like quite a feat.
Hmm. Flo Rida and Kellie Pickler performing on the same Idol results show. Can’t say Idol doesn’t offer up variety, can we?
More results coming up now.
Danny Gokey is next to hear his fate. Predictably, he’s safe.
Matt Giraud is next; he’s been in the bottom three two straight weeks, but got great reviews last night. And, apparently, those great reviews paid off, he’s safe.
Scott MacIntyre’s turn. He is in the bottom three. Apparently folks didn’t like electric-guitar playing Scott as well as piano-playing Scott.
Allison Iraheta and Lil Rounds are the final two to get their results. Allison is safe; that’s well deserved. Lil is headed to the bottom three for the first time.
Ryan just asked Simon if the judges’ save will be in play tonight. Simon indicated it might be. That the judges might consider saving a couple of the contestants in the bottom three.
Guess he has to say that to keep up the suspense in tonight’s show. But, really, Simon. Have any of these contestants shown the potential to win this show? I’d have to answer with a resounding “no.”
But before we get to that, we hear from Kellie Pickler, singing “Best Days of Your Life,” the song she wrote with tour buddy Taylor Swift. If you missed Kellie at Sunday’s ACM awards, that’s her at right. You can find many, many photos from the show, especially of Entertainer of the Year Carrie Underwood here and here.
As for Kellie’s song, it comes from her second album, the self-titled sophomore effort that’s been something of a sophomore slump to this point. But I’d encourage everyone to check out “Rocks Instead of Rice,” a fun song and probably the best tune on the album. Here’s a link to Kellie’s MySpace page where you can check it out.
And, now, we learn that Lil Rounds is safe and will be around to sing another week.
Ryan just told us only 30,00 votes separated Scott and Anoop.
And Scott is the low vote-getter.
Please, judges, don’t waste the save on Scott. He has not turned in a really good vocal yet this season. He has no chance of challenging Adam Lambert for the Idol title. Great guy. Great story. Great inspiration. But not a great singer so far in this year’s finals.
There’s a split between the judges, apparently. Two think Scott should stay; two think Scott should go.
And now, the final verdict: It’s the end of the competition for Scott.
Good call, Simon.
