Patrick Thompson called it “an emotional roller coaster.”
Jake Barker called it “unbelievable.”
They were talking about being stolen on The Voice.
Patrick, Jake and Biff Gore lost their battle rounds Monday night, but all got second chances on the hit NBC show.
That’s because they were plucked from elimination by other coaches, Shakira, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, respectively.
Of course, Patrick’s experience differed a good deal from Jake’s.
The 35-year-old from Festus, Missouri, had heard Blake declare Kat Perkins the victor after their performance of “Whenever I Call You Friend.” He’d thanked Adam for serving as his coach. He was about to walk off the stage.
It’s at that point that Shakira pressed her save button, declaring herself “a sucker” for a raspy singing voice like his.
“I was like a deer caught in the headlights,” Patrick said. “I didn’t know what to do. It’s an honor to be able to work with not only one superstar (coach), but two.
“I also know what it feels like to be going home,” he said during a conference call with the media. “I don’t want to feel that again.”
Jake didn’t have that anxiety. After he and Stevie Jo finished singing “When I Was Your Man,” Adam declared that he would steal whoever Usher didn’t save.
Usher declared Stevie Jo the winner, cutting loose Jake.
But it turns out Adam had to compete for Jake’s services. Shakira and Blake pushed their steal buttons as well.
“I felt like I could have cried at that moment, it was such a good feeling,” said the 28-year-old from St. Petersburg, Fla. “I’m happy I got to stay in the competition.”
Performing on stage for just the second time, Jake said he still struggled a bit with stage fright.
“The cool thing is, me and Stevie are such good friends, we went into the battle with a mentality of no man left behind,” he added. “That took a little pressure off — going on stage and being there with a friend.”
