James Pyle saved; Cami Clune, Marisa Corvo shine on The Voice

0

James Pyle was stolen and Larriah Jackson and Ryan Gallagher earned saves on the last battle round episode of The Voice Season 19.

Larriah of Team Gwen and Ryan of Team Kelly now advance to a four-way knockout that will also feature Julia Cooper of Team John and Tayrn Papa of Team Blake.

James is now a member of Team Blake Shelton. He was the recipient of the final battle round steal.

One note for fans of the show. The battles are not aired in the order they were filmed.

James’ save occurred in the final battle filmed on the second day of battle round tapings.

Five of the battles featured Monday night occurred on the third day of taping, when no saves or steals remained and I’ve noted that below.

BEST OF THE NIGHT

TEAM JOHN LEGEND

The matchup: Cami Clune, 20, of Buffalo, N.Y. vs. James Pyle, 30, of Columbus, Ohio
The song: Wicked Game by Chris Isaak
The background: Cami turned four chairs in the blinds; James turned just one, but that’s because he was the last singer to audition.
The feedback: Gwen and Blake gave a slim edge to James; Kelly did the same for Cami.
The results: John named Cami the winner, saying she reminds him of Season 16 champ Maelyn Jarmon. Blake then stole James.
My take: These were two of my favorite singers from the blinds and they didn’t disappoint in this battle. I liked Cami’s vocal just a touch more, but am glad to see both advance.

BEST VOCAL OF THE NIGHT

TEAM KELLY CLARKSON

The matchup: Marisa Corvo, 33, of Irvine, Calif. vs. Ryan Gallagher, 31, of Los Angeles, Calif.
The song: I Surrender by Celine Dion
The background: Marisa turned three chairs in the blind audition; Ryan turned two.
The feedback: John and Blake were overwhelmed by Marisa’s vocal. Gwen complimented both vocals.
The results: Kelly declared Marisa the winner. Then she saved Ryan. He’ll advance to the four-way knockouts. Again, I think all saves and steals should be determined after every single battle is staged.
My take: Wow, Mariso Corvo’s voice. Superb vocal. This was the fourth battle aired tonight and easily the best vocal to that point. Not sure the song choice did Ryan any favors.

THE COACH GOT IT WRONG

TEAM GWEN STEFANI

The matchup: Carter Rubin, 14, of Shoreham, N.Y. vs. Larriah Jackson, 15, of Sacramento, Calif.
The song: Like I’m Gonna Lose You by Meghan Trainor
The background: Carter turned two chairs during the blind auditions; Larriah turned just Gwen’s.
The feedback: Blake and John gave a slight edge to Larriah. But both singers got rave reviews from all three coaches not named Gwen.
The results: Gwen awarded the match to Carter, complimented his beautiful tone. She then saved Larriah, who advances to the four-way knockout.
My take: Larriah performed well beyond her age, seemed perfectly comfortable in spite of her youth and deserved the win. Carter was excellent for his age, but you shouldn’t get bonus points for being young on this show.

TEAM GWEN STEFANI

The matchup: Ryan Berg, 27, of Dallas, Texas vs. Liam St. John, 29, of Los Angeles, Calif.
The song: I Need a Dollar by Aloe Blacc
The background: Ryan and Liam each turned two chairs during the blind auditions.
The feedback: Kelly and Blake gave the edge to Ryan. But everyone complimented Liam’s showmanship and range.
The results: Gwen awards the win to Ryan.
My take: Vocally, I agreed the Ryan was the more consistent performer. But Liam brought so much energy to the stage, he deserved the save that Gwen had already used.
Special Note: No steals or saves remained when this battle was filmed.

THE COACH GOT IT RIGHT

TEAM JOHN LEGEND

The matchup: Casme, 39, of New Orleans, La. vs. Rio Souma, 28, of Detroit, Mich.
The song: You’re All I Need to Get By by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
The background: Rio turned three chairs in the blinds; Caseme turned just John’s.
The feedback: Gwen and Kelly gave the edge to Casme based on her stage presence.
The results: John called the performance beautiful and complimented both artists. He awarded the win to Casme. Rio was eliminated.
My take: Casme commands the stage and her voice absolutely soared at the end of that performance. She deserved the win.
Special Note: No steals or saves remained when this battle was filmed.

TEAM BLAKE SHELTON

The matchup: Ian Flanigan, 30, of Saugerties, N.Y. vs. Aaron Scott, 36, Tomah, Wisc.
The song: Have You Ever Seen the Rain? by CRC
The background: Aaron turned two chairs in the blind auditions; Ian turned just Blake’s.
The feedback: John and Kelly gave the edge to Ian based on his unique sound.
The results: Blake awarded the win to Ian for the same reason. Aaron was eliminated.
My take: Nice song choice and a nice version of the song. Aaron showed more vocal versatility, but the coaches were correct in pinpointing Ian as an artist who could stand out because of his sound.

MONTAGED

Note that 19 seasons in, The Voice still can’t be bothered to air all the performances. Tonight, that would have meant 23 minutes of music in two hours. Doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

What’s more, the artists invest tons of time in these performances. You’d think the show could at least post them online. The cameras, obviously are rolling.

But, nope, The Voice can be bothered.

TEAM GWEN STEFANI

The matchup: Van Andrew, 29, of Nashville, Tenn., vs. Tori Miller, 26, of Phoenix, Ariz.
The song: Exile by Taylor Swift
The background: Van Andrew turned two chairs. Tori turned just Gwen’s, but only two coaches had spots available when she auditioned.
The results: Gwen named Van the winner; Tori was eliminated.
Special Note: No steals or saves remained when this battle was filmed.

TEAM BLAKE SHELTON

The matchup: Ben Allen, 42, of Estero, Fla. vs. Sam Stacy, 27, of Los Angeles, Calif.
The song: Free by the Bac Brown Band
The background: Both singers turned three chairs during the blind auditions.
The results: Blake named Ben the winner; Sam was eliminated.
Special Note: No steals or saves remained when this battle was filmed.

TEAM KELLY CLARKSON

The matchup: Kelsie Watts, 29, of Nashville, Tenn. vs. Emmalee, 20, of Clarksville, Tenn.
The song: I Love Me by Demi Lovato
The background: Kelsie and Emmalee each turned two chairs during the blind auditions.
The results: Kelsie was named the winner; Emmalee was eliminated.
Special Note: No steals or saves remained when this battle was filmed.
