JessLee says her time on The Voice was a bit shorter than she had hoped.
But the country-rocker from Florida says she’s undaunted and plans to unveil a new sound to her fans, perhaps as early as this summer.
Pre-Voice, JessLee released an EP in 2015 and a handful of singles since, including 2017’s “Burn.”
She landed a spot on Team Blake Shelton during The Voice Season 14 blind auditions, but was then pitted against one of his most powerful singers, Kyla Jade, in the battle round. JessLee was eliminated when Blake declared Kyla the winner.
Here’s what JessLee told Voice Views about her time on the show and her plans moving forward.
Voice Views: I know the battles were filmed a while back. What have you been doing musically since then?
JessLee: Since filming the battles I’ve been getting my new music ready for the release of my newest EP, coming soon. I’m also finalizing my S.T.R.O.N.G. (motivational) program and here soon I’ll be presenting it, starting in Florida schools.
Voice Views: Can you tell me a little more about the EP you’re planning? What can fans expect in terms of sound? How will it compare to past music you’ve released?
JessLee: The sound is extremely innovative and more edgy compared to my previous releases. It’s a sound my producer and I are coining “punktry” (Country-Punk-rock mix).
I was always influenced by female rock sounds like Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, Paramore, Fly Leaf, to name a few. But country is what I grew up on as well and will always bemy roots. I wanted to come up with a more signature sound, not following the same recycled chord progressions, being used repeatedly in country music right now.
It’s looking like the new release will be around late summer this year. Announcements will be coming on that soon, just finalizing some contractual obligations.
Voice Views: Where do you see your time on the show leading you musically? Do you envision releasing more music anytime soon and, if so, what can you tell me about that?
JessLee: I was performing and releasing music before the show, full time. So, with the extra bit of exposure, I’ll absolutely be continuing to push myself to the top of the country music industry.
Voice Views: Do you think you grew as an artist as a result of The Voice experience? If so, in what way?
JessLee: I think every experience in life is a lesson and for growth. It was a little shorter of an experience than I expecting but I was able to meet some beautiful people and learn a few new things, along the way.
