For the second time, Joanna Serenko’s Voice future was in jeopardy on Monday’s show.
And, for the second time, a coach stepped in and rescued her from elimination.
This time, that coach was Blake Shelton, though Joanna also had the option of rejoining original coach Nick Jonas.
John Legend, who had stolen Joanna in the battle round, pitted her against Zan Fiskum in the knockout round.
Joanna performed “Angel from Montgomery” by Bonnie Raitt and got excellent feedback from the coaches.
When John declared Zan the winner, Blake and Nick were quick to hit their save buttons in an effort to have the 18-year-old from St. Louis join their team.
Here’s what Joanna told Voice Views about the experience.
Voice Views: Can you elaborate a bit on that knockout round sound choice? Why you decided to go with “Angel From Montgomery?”
Joanna: I went with Angel From Montgomery because it’s a beautiful classic song written by John Prine and sung by Bonnie Raitt, so it showed off another style of singing I haven’t yet gotten to showcase on the show. It helped show that I can be versatile with genre.
Voice Views: What’s your performance history with that song? Is it one you’ve performed live often?
Joanna: Last year I learned it for a friend who’s friend passed away. We recorded it and sent it to their family. But it’s just such a beautiful song, I started incorporating it into sets and was lucky enough to sing it on the show as well
Voice Views: How did you feel about your chances of being stolen once Zan was announced as the winner of the knockout?
Joanna: I felt like Nick might steal me back, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to be stolen by Blake as well, especially because he chose Zan to win the battle too.
Voice Views: And why did you decide to join Team Blake?
Joanna: I decided to join team Blake because I wanted to experience working with a third coach on the show. And also because it just felt right in the moment.
Voice Views: Singers are now through three rounds of the show. Can you pinpoint / explain the biggest improvement you think you’ve made to this point as a result of the show?
Joanna: I honestly feel like even though it’s felt like the rounds have been getting increasingly harder (as far as nervousness goes), I’ve increasingly gained more confidence in myself and my abilities as a singer, knowing that a coach would steal me and bring me to lives. It’s definitely helped me give myself more credit as an artist and is proof of how far I’ve come.
