Each Voice coach has just one steal during the Season 18 battle rounds.
John Legend decided to use his on Joanna Serenko, 18, from St. Louis.
Joanna had turned four chairs during the blind audition, but found her Voice fate in jeopardy when Nick Jonas declared Roderick Chambers the winner of their battle round match.
That said, both singers received praise for their performances on a duet of Billie Eilish’s “When the Party’s Over.”
And John didn’t hesitate to push his steal button for Joanna, adding her to what already appeared to be the show’s strongest team.
Here’s what Joanna told Voice Views about her battle round experience.
Voice Views: What do you think was the key to the success of that battle round performance?
Joanna: I think the key to success was having confidence in myself to do what I do naturally, and just giving it my all. Conveying feeling in every moment and performing it to our best ability!
Voice Views: How did the song choice work for you? Did it pose any special challenges?
Joanna: I was surprised with the song choice because Billie Eilish’s version doesn’t vocally showcase a lot. The song particularly challenged my range; the beginning starting very low and then having to use a high head voice for other parts. Also tailoring the song in order to make it original and show off the things I’m good at like belting and control.
Voice Views: Both you and Roderick got amazing feedback from the coaches? Once he advanced, how were you feeling about your odds of being saved/stolen, especially since you’d turned 4 chairs in the blind auditions?
Joanna: I felt confident about getting stolen, but in the moment it was still extremely nerve wracking!
Voice Views: Anything else you’d like to add about the battle round experience?
Joanna: It was awesome to work with Roderick, to see our piece get tighter as we worked on it together. He’s got an amazing tone and he’s super easy to blend with, definitely one of my most favorite performances of my life!
Voice Views: And, obviously, you can’t talk about song choice, but is there a side of your artistry you haven’t gotten to display yet that you hope to in coming rounds?
Joanna: I hope to keep the ball rolling as far as differing genres to show off my versatility as an artist!
