You’ll want to check out the new EP from Season 7 Voice contestant Joe Kirk.
Last month, Joe released his debut EP, the five-song “All I Know.” Wednesday, he released the music video for the EP’s title track; you can check it out below.
Joe’s an interesting case when it comes to former Voice contestants.
He auditioned for the show at age 17, turned four chairs with his performance of “Lego House,” only to be eliminated in the battle round.
He almost immediately released a single called “Believe,” promising more original music would be on the way.
But it was three years before his second single “Ten” — also the excellent lead track for the current EP — landed.
Joe told Voice Views the time in between releases was one of growth, as a performer and songwriter.
“I have been working on writing day in and day out, trying to make sure that I give the world the best material that I can. After writing hundreds of song, these are the five that I wanted to show the world.”
In the process, his approach changed.
“When I think of describing where I am now in comparison to where I was when I started, the one word that comes to mind is real,” said Joe, who also celebrated his birthday Wednesday.
“When I released ‘Believe,’ I was making music that I thought everyone wanted to hear. This music expresses exactly who I have always aspired to be as an artist. I chose every song. I wrote the songs about real experiences in my life. This EP tells my story and hopefully will give my fans a feeling of getting to know me on a more personal level.”
The most personal song on the EP, he says, is the closing track, a heartfelt ballad called “Let This Go.”
Joe calls it the “most difficult songs I’ve ever written because it came from a very vulnerable place.” It’s about a “bad relationship” he found himself in.
“No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t let go of whatever it was I thought we had,” he recalls. “This song describes the thought process that I experienced and how I felt when I realized that she and I weren’t supposed to be together.
“Things always work out for the better … she ended up where she is supposed to be and I did as well. But when you’re in he middle of the struggle, it’s hard to see that.
“‘Let This Go’ has been the song so many fans have reached out to me about,” Joe adds. “I think it’s because it’s so relatable. No matter how old you are or how happy your life is currently, most people can identify with the pain In this song.”
You can follow Joe through his Facebook page and Instagram. On Twitter, he’s @JoeKirkMusic.
Now, here’s that new music video.
