Jordy Searcy just released a new EP that he considers “a huge step forward” from a debut album he released in 2013.
And the 21-year-old Nashville resident says his experience on Season 7 of The Voice gets most of the credit.
“When I got to the show, I quickly realized that I was one of the worst singers there,” Jordy says. “Not that I was terrible, but I was surrounded by some of the top talent in the world. It pushed me to become a better singer, better writer, better artist and better performer.”
Flash forward a year and Jordy has released “Seasons,” a singer-songwriter style EP that features five tracks, including two versions of the title song. One is fully produced; one is a stripped down live version.
Jordy says he wrote the song when he was 19. And while it’s technically a love song, he says it has come to mean more to him than that.
“The bridge says, ‘the seasons will change, and we will too / but the less that remains, the more we’re brand new,’ which is my favorite lyric on the EP. Basically, things change and people grow and are different, but the more we change the more we’re being made into brand new people every day.
Jordy grew up in Florence, Ala., and landed a spot on The Voice when he turned three chairs with his cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.” He was eliminated in a battle round match with Taylor Phelan, but their version of “Breakeven” has attracted more then 2.3 million views on YouTube.
He’s stayed in touch with his former colleagues on the show. In fact, he played guitar and co-wrote a song on an EP released earlier this year by Kensington Moore. And they performed several shows together earlier this year.
“It’s great to have a community of musicians that all have each other’s back,” Jordy says. “It’s surprisingly rare in this industry.”
Speaking of touring, Jordy has about a half dozen dates lined up through mid-December. More are coming. So are videos of some of his new material.
You can keep up with Jordy’s tour schedule on his Facebook page. On Twitter, he’s @jordytSearcy.
“I want to make the southeast my home,” Jordy says, “and I will play as much as I can for as many people as I can.”
