Now he’s ready to work on his first post-Voice album, and he’s turning to his fans to help fund it via a Kickstarter campaign.
“I’m getting excited to get back into the studio under my own terms and make the best album of my career,” Joshua says in his Kickstarter intro. “I have been pouring my heart into a bunch of songs over the past couple months. These songs are filled with hope and inspired by family and community.”
And after self-producing most of his prior projects, Joshua has brought on “one of my heroes” and “a roots-rock pioneer” to helm this album — Steve Berlin from Los Lobos.
“I can’t think of a more perfect producer for this record,” Joshua says.
Of course, there will be rewards for those who contribute. Those are all outlined on the Kickstarter page. For $250, you can even get a Skype music lesson from Joshua — on songwriting, playing guitar, even playing the ukulele, mandolin of clawhammer banjo.
Joshua’s Kickstarter goal is $30,000, partly because he also wants to raise money to promote the album once it’s completed.
“In the past, I’ve made albums that I’m very proud of but haven’t put much weight behind promotion,” he says. “I want this project to be different. I feel like we’re on the cusp of something really incredible and I want to harness that momentum and really push this album.”
As of Tuesday, he’d already raised nearly $6,000 toward his goal. The Kickstarter campaign runs through Sept. 4. Oh, and the new album will be released on CD and vinyl in addition to digitally.
Joshua, a full-time musician for about 20 years, was 37 when he auditioned for The Voice. He wound up finishing third behind Sawyer Fredericks and Meghan Linsey. Along the way, six of his covers from the show cracked the Top 20 on iTunes singles chart.
The singles from earlier this year — “Always Going to Be Here” and “Let Me In” — are available on iTunes and on vinyl through Joshua’s website.
