Jovin Webb was eliminated in the American Idol episode that aired Sunday night.
But by that time, the singer from Gonzalez, La., had already established himself as one of the best and most distinctive male voices on the show and one of the most ready-for-prime-time artists thanks to his performance style.
Jovin auditioned with “Whipping Post” by the Allman Brothers Band, earning a unanimous golden ticket to Hollywood. He also dazzled in Hollywood, teaming up with Faith Becnel for a highly-praised version of “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World.”
But it was his Hawaii showcase performance of Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing” that Jovin calls his favorite.
Jovin, 28 when he auditioned, performed with the bands Bayou Bullets and Captain Green pre-Idol. Here’s what he told Idol Chatter about his experience on the show.
Idol Chatter: What do you consider your biggest takeaway / lesson learned from the American idol experience?
Jovin: The biggest takeaway from this whole thing (was) reassurance (that) this is what I was meant to do, and this show gave me a glimpse of stardom and I want it all! If anything I’ve started to believe in myself more than I ever have in my life since the show started.
Idol Chatter: Which was your favorite American Idol performance and why?
Jovin: Hawaii was hands down my favorite performance. For one, we were at an amazing resort and spa for free. Hard to beat that. Lol The real reason is that performance was the last time on the show that we got to have a crowd. Had no idea the whole show would change.
Idol Chatter: What was the experience like, performing for American Idol — and fans around the country — from your own home?
Jovin: Performing on Idol was a dream come true. Even at this point it still doesn’t seem real. Just the platform Idol has given me is all I can asked for. I went from doing cover videos on Facebook getting a few thousand views to having one of my Idol performances reach over 15 million views. I’m blessed!
Idol Chatter: Obviously lots of plans are in limbo because of the pandemic, but what are your post-Idol plans musically? Where are you hoping this opportunity leads?
Jovin: My plan was to hopefully get close enough in the show that they would have to notice me and offer me a deal/contract. That’s still my plan.
Idol Chatter: Do you plan to release music anytime soon? If so, what can you say about the sound, the timing, etc.?
Jovin: I already have some music released on all streaming platforms. My sound is what got me here so I’m keeping that blues and rock and roll all the way.
Idol Chatter: Finally, is there anything else you’d like to add about the Idol experience?
Jovin: This is just the beginning. America watch my smoke.
