Karli Webster told her hometown radio station she wasn’t quite sure what to do when she found out she and Addison Agen would be singing Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in the battle round on The Voice.

“Listening to it was like, ‘This is not the song for me,'” she said.

Then she and Addison started working on an arrangement that turns the smash hit into a ballad celebrating female empowerment.

You might say they worked it out.

Both survived to sing in The Voice knockout round, which is the ultimate goal during any battle round match.

What’s more, their performance became easily the most successful of the 24 battle round matches on Season 13.

Or any other performance so far, for that matter.

Their slowed-down version of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” hit was number 37 on the iTunes singles chart the day after the show.

No other song from Season 13 has cracked the Top 100.

Oh, and it’s also been viewed more than 1 million times on YouTube.

Karli, 20, of Santa Clarita, Calif., was declared by winner of the battle round by coach Miley Cyrus.

Two coaches — Jennifer Hudson and Adam Levine — tried to steal Addison. She opted to join Team Adam.

The secret to their success?

“We spent so long (working on the song) before we even met with Miley and Billy (Ray Cyrus),” Addison told Voice Views. “Literally hours, hours, hours just at the piano — and luckily (Karli’s) a great piano player. We put so much work in, and we made it into exactly what we wanted to do.”

And a good deal of the credit goes to Miley, Addison added.

“The coaches all said that (Karli) has a really beautiful, high register, and I have a very low, slow kind of tone and they blend together really, really well,” the 16-year-old from Fort Wayne, Indiana, said. “So I think it was just how smart Miley was pairing us together that she knew we would make something great.”

During a conference call with the media, Karli said she had no idea who would be declared the winner. She and Addison are close friends, she said, and agreed that talent-wise, they were evenly matched. It would just come down to the style of singer Miley wanted on her team.

“We were both shocked when she called my name, but we had planned and worked so hard for the outcome that one of us would get stolen,” Karli said. “We were both very happy that it worked out the way that we wanted.”

Of course, that outcome left Addison with another coaching decision to make. In the blind audition round, she’d turned two chairs and selected Miley over Adam.

She didn’t turn Adam down a second time and thinks they make a good team.

“He understands what I want to do musically and that I’m more about telling stories than like showing off my voice and stuff like that,” Addison said. “That stuff is awesome, and I admire that too, but that’s just not what I like to do as a folk artist.”

The knockout rounds begin Monday night on The Voice.

Editor’s Note: The episodes of The Voice we’re watching at this point are pre-taped. Karli actually has her first full concert tonight with The Band Lexington at Wolf Creek Brewery in Valencia, Calif.
