But the young woman from Mission Viejo, Calif., wound up being stolen in the battle round and made it all the way to the live cross battles before being eliminated.
Along the way, she received praise for her unique vocals and upbeat personality. Not to mention a few requests for skateboarding lessons.
Here’s what Karly, 23 when she auditioned, told Voice Views about her time on the show, which included performances of “Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld, “Down” by Marian Hill and a “Friends” duet with Celia Babini. And stints on Team Adam Levine and Team Blake Shelton.
Voice Views: Which was your favorite performance on The Voice and why?
Karly: That’s a tough one!! I have enjoyed every one of them for different reasons! I’d probably have to say the Cross Battle performance though. I cannot believe I got to experience singing LIVE on national television. WHAT?! It was scary but so much fun! Knowing that it could have been my last performance on the show, I was able to soak in every second of it and really be present!
Voice Views: That was the first time The Voice has held cross battles. What was it like? What did you think of the experience? Is there anything you’d suggest the show change if they use that format again?
Karly: Cross battles I think were really cool to experience … I like that I got to be a part of something new and different! I don’t really have any suggestions about the format, but I do know there is definitely room for improvement!
Voice Views: Where do you see your time on the show leading you musically? What do you have planned next? Do you think you’ll be releasing new music in the future and, if so, what can fans expect in terms of sound/timing?
Karly: I’m hoping that my time on the show brings opportunity!! I’m feeling more inspired than ever! My goal is to hone in on writing and releasing music REALLY soon and then go on tour! I’ve already started working on some music;) Very excited about it!
Voice Views: Do you think you grew as an artist as a result of The Voice experience? If so, in what way?
Karly: I definitely think I grew as an artist on the show!! It was a little outside of my comfort zone and something I told myself I’d be too scared to do and I think in situations like that, you grow!! I realized I was capable of more than I thought! I was able to work with the most amazing people and learn from the best! I’m excited to continue to push myself musically and apply all that I learned while I was there.
Voice Views: Is there anything else you’d like to add about your experience on the show?
Karly: I can’t thank The Voice enough for this amazing opportunity. I can honestly say that I had the time of my life and it was the experience of a lifetime. Literally the coolest thing I’ve ever done and I will be forever grateful. I believe I made some lifelong friendships there. It was such a pleasure getting to spend time with all the other contestants. It’s crazy how talented, supportive and just genuinely nice they all were!! Adam and Blake are GEMS and I feel so honored to have been on their teams. Every person that works on that show is amazing.. THANK YOU ALL! YEWWW!!!
