Kat Robichaud: Cee Lo’s perfect storm on The Voice

0

Kat Robichaud turned three chairs during the blind auditions on The Voice with her robust, spot-on vocals.

Those vocals were no less impressive during her battle round victory over R. Anthony last week, singing Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” for Team Cee Lo.

But the coaches on The Voice seemed equally impressed with Kat’s take-no-prisoners performance style, complete with fist pumps, a fancy little scuttle-step across the stage — in high-heel boots no less — and a triumphant sweep of the mic after a soaring glory note.

Blake Shelton and Adam Levine praised her intensity. Christina Aguilera called her a “tiger.”

As for Cee Lo Green, her own coach?

He called her “a natural disaster,” and meant it in the best possible way, saying “I need a storm like you on my team.”

“That’s me,” Kat said of the animated performance. “I just get possessed by music and it just moves me. I like to run around. I’ve always been the kind of performer that likes to get really sweaty when they’re performing.

“I’ll go out into the crowd and grab people. I like to crowd surf, you know. I’m a very theatrical, rock and roller. That’s just who I am. I can’t be anyone else. I’m weird.”

So far, it’s worked. She’s been one of the most impressive contestants early in Season 5.

And though the 29-year-old from Raleigh, N.C., spent several years fronting a rock band called “The Design” (check out their 2011 album “Young America”), she says Aerosmith wasn’t on the set list.

“We did cover that particular song once for a wedding, but we learned it specifically for that wedding and then I think we broke up pretty soon afterwards.

“I love Aerosmith. My very first cassette tape was ‘Get a Grip.’ So I was excited to do the song and it’s one of my mom’s favorites.”

Kat also praised R. Anthony for his “amazing performance” and said he gave a goodbye speech that wasn’t aired but had everyone in tears.

As for the judges’ reaction to her performance?

After comments like she got, how could Kat be anything but thrilled?

“It was like high-fiving a million angels,” she said.
