She wrote the song in honor of Sara Burns, a stay-at-home mom in Canada who decided to pursue her dream of becoming a police officer.
Sara eventually became a constable with the police department in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
She had been on the job a little more than two years when she was shot and killed at age 43 in August 2018 by a gunman who took three other lives as well.
Kayley, a contestant on Season 15 of The Voice, said Sara’s husband and his friends showed up at one of her performances in Nashville and shared the story with her.
“I wrote this song for her and her family as a way of celebrating her life and performed it at her memorial benefit (in February),” Kayley explains on her Facebook page.
During National Police Week (May 12-18), she also donated proceeds from downloads of the song to nami.org which is a charity that provides hope and recovery for those struggling with mental health.
Kayley says that, so far, $800,000 has been raised and donated in Sara’s name to charities aiding domestic violence, continued education, and mental health and wellness.
