Idols at awards shows

Kelly Clarkson’s baffling CMA Awards nomination

Gotta say, I’m a little baffled by one of the nominations for the 2013 County Music Awards.

Somehow, the original Idol, Kelly Clarkson, made the list of nominees for female vocalist of the year.

Huh?

OK, back in 2011, Kelly scored a country hit singing with Jason Aldean on his “Don’t You Want to Stay” single, which hit number one on Billboard’s country songs chart.

But Kelly and Jason already received CMA nominations for that song, and in fact won the award for musical event of the year back in 2011.

Kelly’s more recent country credentials?

The “Don’t Rush” duet with Vince Gill from her greatest hits album failed to crack the top 20 on Billboard. Her latest single, “Tie It Up,” hasn’t made it out of the top 30.

And for that she gets a nomination as Female Vocalist of the Year?

Regardless, she’s not likely to win. Not up against the likes of Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Taylor Swift and fellow former Idol Carrie Underwood.

For those who get their country music awards shows confused — count me among them — this is the one hosted by Carrie and Brad Paisley. This year’s show will air Wednesday, Nov. 6, on ABC.

Carrie won Female Vocalist of the Year honors for three straight years and is also nominated for album of the year (“Blown Away”) and video of the year (the “Blown Away” single).

Other album of the year nominees include Blake Shelton’s “Based on a True Story,” Taylor Swift’s “Red,” Kacey Musgraves’ “Same Trailer Different Park” and Little Big Town’s “Tornado.”

Kelly has a second nomination, for musical event of the year. That’s for her “Don’t Rush” duet with Vince Gill at the 2012 CMA Awards show.

And Voice judge Blake Shelton has a host of nominations — entertainer of the year, male vocalist of the year, album of the year, musical event of the year and music video of the year.

Blake earned the entertainer of the year nod last year. His competition this year: Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, George Strait and Taylor Swift.
