Kree Harrison, runner-up on American Idol Season 13, released her new album Friday.

Kree Harrison released her sophomore album Friday, six years after her highly successful run on American Idol.

The 12-song collection is called “Chosen Family Tree,” and the 30-year-old Kree calls it her most personal project to date.

The title was inspired by the “chosen family” she’s created since embarking on a music career in Nashville.

“Growing up I had the understanding that sometimes blood isn’t always thicker than water,” she says in a press release about the album.

“After losing family at an earlier age, I developed relationships with people that soon became my chosen family.”

Kree lost both her parents before appearing on Season 13 of American Idol. Her father died in a plane crash in 2001; her mother in an automobile accident in 2009.

She went on to finish second on the show and released her debut country album, “This Old Thing,” in 2016.

Kree recorded her new album at Echo Mountain Recording Studio in Asheville, N.C. She co-produced with Jordan Lehning and Skylar Wilson.

“As we sat down to write Chosen Family Tree, it felt like a love letter came pouring out of all of us. A love letter to my community — my chosen family — of all different colors and backgrounds.

“I found comfort in knowing that I am not the only one who experiences this. Finding family in our neighbors, friends, community, and jobs. Not just in blood. They love me unconditionally, and I love them unconditionally. They support me, I support them, that is what a chosen family does.”

The album has a classic country feel. Standout tracks include lead single “I Love the Lie” (released in 2019), “That’s How Hearts Get Broken” and ‘Get Away with Anything.” You can check out snippets of all three below. Kree also covers John Lennon’s “Mother” on the album.

As of Saturday, “Chosen Family Tree” was sitting in the Top 30 on Apple Music’s country albums chart.
