After The Voice

LACES shares her personal message of ‘Freedom’ in song

— the singer we knew on The Voice as Charlotte Sometimes — has released a new song with a personal message.

The song is called “Freedom,” hit iTunes Thursday and stems from a time a few years ago when she describes herself as “a broken young woman” who had been sexually assaulted, was relying on anti-depressants to numb her pain and didn’t want to live anymore.

LACES shares the story behind the song in a heartfelt Facebook post you can read in its entirety here. Bottom line: She found a spark inside herself to push on.

“‘Freedom’ was incredibly hard for me to write, because it meant I had to start to let things go,” the 28-year-old writes. “It meant I needed to believe I am worth loving and that the terrible bullsh*t I had been through, didn’t define me and would not define me. I was going to have to be the author of my own life.

“This song is for anyone who has ever felt truly lost, ashamed, hurt, abused, scared, and alone. You’re beautiful, you’re wonderful, you are loved, and it’s going to get better. NOW GO DANCE YOUR TROUBLES AWAY!!!”

As Charlotte Sometimes, Jessie Poland made it to the Top 24 on the second season of The Voice and released lots of original music still available on iTunes.

As LACES, she released a five-track debut EP last summer. You can also follow her on Twitter at @LACESmusic.
