If you were baffled by Lilly Scott’s elimination from American Idol Thursday night, join the crowd.
Lilly herself has a couple of different theories about her ouster, including the possibility that her fans aren’t the type to watch American Idol.
“My demographic is probably more of the underground scene, (people) who probably don’t even own a TV,” Lilly said in a conference call with the media.
“And if they do, they’re probably out riding their bike or doing something more productive than watching TV, let alone American Idol.”
Another theory: Perhaps the fans who were watching thought she was safe and didn’t bother to vote.
Lilly made it pretty clear that the Thursday night eliminations made little sense to her after “watching certain people make it into the top 12 that kind of had not done so well the past three weeks.”
The 20-year-old from Denver said she hoped to break the mold on Idol, hoped to be the off-beat contestant who “did exactly what I wanted to do” and expressed herself through her song choice.
“I thought I could break the mold, but I guess it’s another (American Idol) season of the same old stuff.”
Singing Patsy Cline this week might have hurt, she admitted, since many pre-teens watching the show probably aren’t familiar with her music. Lilly said she wanted to perform a Radiohead song one week, but couldn’t get it cleared.
Had she advanced, “I knew I could have done a great job next week with the Rolling Stones and I knew I could have really kicked butt in the top 12.”
As for the future, Lilly would love to work with Bjork and Tom Yorke of Radiohead. She thinks she might be perfect for the summer festival circuit, events like Coachella and Bonnaroo.
Of course, recording music is on her to-do list. Prior to Idol, her band Varlet had an EP available on CD Baby.
She’d like to know the vote totals from Thursday’s show, but says those aren’t revealed to contestants.
In the end, Lilly preferred to look at the bright side.
“Maybe I was just too off the wall for people,” she said.
“Or maybe it was just my time to go out with a bang so I could still keep my indie cred and kind of do my own thing without having the American Idol label over my head.”
