Near the end of Sunday night’s episode of American Idol, judge Katy Perry announced she was voting for Maddie Poppe.
Lots of other American Idol fans must have followed suit.
At the end of a two-hour season finale filled with duets featuring Season 14 contestants and guest stars, Maddie was named winner of American Idol Season 14.
The 20-year-old from Clarksville, Iowa, triumphed over third-place finisher Gabby Barrett, the show’s front-runner for most of the season, and runner-up Caleb Lee Hutchinson.
Caleb wasn’t complaining. He confessed to Ryan Seacrest during Monday’s show that he and Maddie are dating.
“MY GIRLFRIEND WON AMERICAN IDOL!!!” he wrote on Twitter. “No one deserved it more than you, babe. I am honored to know you and even more honored to call you mine.”
