Her audition: Emily Keener, 16, of Wakeman, Ohio, auditioned with a unique reworking of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” by Elton John. She had all four coaches facing her direction by the time she hit the chorus. Blake Shelton raved over her vocals, calling her voice “a completely new sound.” Pharrell Williams complimented Emily on using the entire “tapestry” of her voice during the performance and called that voice “magical.”
Her background: She explains that her home is in the middle of nowhere. She lives on 37 acres of forested land that’s very private and quiet. Music was always going on, she says. She recalls her dad introducing her to the music of Johnny Cash, Elvis and The Beatles. Her parents got Emily her first guitar when she was 10. “A couple of years later, I started playing shows.” Emily says she started writing her own songs at age 12. “When you’re quiet and introspective as a kid, sometimes it’s hard to put your thoughts into words,” she says. “When you’re writing a song, it’s a great way to communicate things.” Now, she feels ready for a bigger stage.
What the show didn’t show:
On iTunes: Her performance from The Voice as well as the 11-track “A Book of New Beginnings” from 2013 and the eight-track “East of the Sun” from 2015.
