His audition: Joe Maye, 24, of Baltimore, Md., auditioned with “I Put a Spell on You.” He opened the song a cappella, earning a chair turn from Christina Aguilera. Blake Shelton turned late in the performance. To seal the deal and make sure Joe landed on her team, Christina strolled to the stage and performed a duet of the song with the young man.
His background: Joe is another of the returning auditioners who failed to turn a chair in Season 9. The first time around, he says he felt confident when he took the stage to perform Cameo’s “Word Up.” But because he was moving so much during the performance, the coaches questioned the song choice and dancing’s effect on his vocals. He returned to his bartending job. But for Season 10, he returned with two Voice friends — Season 9 standouts Mark Hood and Ellie Lawrence. “I’m not dancing this time. I’m standing in place and I’m just going to sing.” The new strategy worked.
