His superb vocal earned nearly simultaneous chair turns from Christina Aguilera, Pharrell Williams and Adam Levine. Near the end of the performance, Blake Shelton turned as well, making Owen just the fifth artist to earn a four-chair turn in Season 10. Adam praised Owen’s “musical identity.” Owen decided to join Team Adam.

His background: He’s lived in Greenwich Village and says he enjoys residing in an area with so much artistic history. “Bob Dylan’s played here. Paul Simon’s played here. To be on the same stage as those people is a great deal.” Owen says he started singing when he was 10 or 11, but adds there’s always been music in his life. That’s largely because of his father, who wrote a couple of hits John Denver recorded, including “Take Me Home Country Road.” Then Bill Danoff formed Starland Vocal Band, which scored a Grammy-winning hit called “Afternoon Delight.” Owen says his dad always took a “hands-off approach” in terms of whether he pursued music. Of course, he’s trying to follow in his father’s footsteps. He chose his audition song because he says Bob Dylan is “one of my song-writing idols.”

What the show didn’t show:

  • Owen’s mom started a restaurant that’s called Afternoon Delight and hosts live music. His Voice bio says that helped inspire Owen to pursue music.
  • According to his website bio, Owen wrote and recorded his first song at age 15.
  • He attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston and graduated with a degree in film scoring.
  • He’s a native of the Washington, D.C., area and was selected for the Strathmore Artist in Residence program in the D.C. aea.
  • On Facebook, he describes his music as a blend of pop and folk, but adds that his “lifelong love of rock” is evident in his live shows.
  • He released an EP in 2012, an excellent album called “Twelve Stories” in 2014 and a single called “No Such Thing” last year.
  • Standout tracks you need to check out on that album include “Juliette” (which I’ve featured here), “I Wish I Knew Better,” “Never Been Kissed” and “Nowhereland.” And I’ve embedded the lyric video for “Never Been Kissed” below. You can check out full-length versions of the others on his YouTube channel.
  • In a conference call with the media, Owen said he expected to pick Team Blake or Team Pharrell if the opportunity presented itself. With all four chairs turning, both were possible, but Owen went with Team Adam. Owen explains: “Adam was the first to turn around and complimented my guitar playing, which goes a long way with me. And everything kind of came flooding back to me. I had been a Maroon 5 fan for a very long time and I thought he really understood where I was coming from. And I grew up listening to pop rock and all that stuff. And I think it just was the best fit in terms of genre. So I went with my gut in the moment and ended up picking him.”
  • On iTunes: His Voice performance, his 2015 single, his 2014 album and the five-track “Never Trust a Man” EP from 2012.
