Blake Shelton turned as well after a performance-ending glory note from Tamar. Christina complimented Tamar on having her “ultimate dream hair” and said it’s time for her to come out of the background. Tamar decided to join Team Christina.

Her background: Growing up in Houston was wonderful, Tamar said, because there was theater, pageants, competitions and “I would just try everything.” At age 11, she joined a singing group called Girls Tyme. That marked her first time recording professionally. Her parents eventually took her out of the group because they wanted her to get an education. “I remember just crying. I remember being just mad at my parents. But looking back, I tell my mom and dad all the time, ‘Thank you. Because it changed my life for the better.” She attended the University of Southern California and majored in music business. After college, she did some demo work and some background singing. Then she met Prince and wound up in his house band. That led to a meeting with Tyler Perry, and she wound up with a role in “The Marriage Counselor.”

What the show didn’t show:

  • Girls Tyme was made up of six young girls, including Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. They competed on Star Search at one point and eventually sparked the super group Destiny’s Child.
  • During her senior year of high school, Tamar got to perform for President Bill Clinton at the Kennedy Center.
  • Tamar also competed on star search as a soloist in 2004 and auditioned for the fourth season of American Idol.
  • Tamar wrote a Grammy-nominated song called “Beautiful, Loved and Blessed” with Prince in 2006.
  • According to her website bio, Tamar contributed background vocals to his “3121” album, appeared in his “Fury” music video and performed with him on Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America.
  • The same bio says she was signed to Univeral Republic Records and recorded an album that was never released because of the label’s split with Prince.
  • She did release a 14-track album called “My Name is Tamar” in 2011. You can also check out several songs on her website.
  • Most recently, she was performing as Diana Ross in the touring cast of “Motown: The Musical.”
  • On iTunes: Her Voice performance and that 2011 album. “Heartbeat” and “Static” were also released as singles.
