Bren'nae DeBargeHer audition: Bren’nae DeBarge, 22, of Anchorage, Alaska, sang Jill Scott’s “Golden” in an audition that was part of a montage package. Adam Levine turned around at the last second of her performance to land Bren’nae for his team.

Her background: According to her Voice bio, Bren’nae grew up all over the world because her dad was in the Air Force. She spent most of her youth in Alaska and Japan. She studied musical engineering in college, but realized singing and performing are her true passions. She married into the DeBarge family, famous for their Motown roots, and hopes to follow their path and become a professional singer.

What the show didn’t show: She was Bren’nae May when she began singing as a child. She says she recorded her first song when she was 16, but didn’t really grasp her passion for music until her first year of college. “I started playing guitar, so that made it easier for me to write songs and actually get my feelings out,” she says in her Voice video. “That’s when I was like, ‘OK, I have to do this.'” She describes her voice as “rich and jazzy” and her style as R&B, pop, soul. According to her Facebook bio, Bren’nae has also dabbled in acting, modeling and dance since age 6 and has been working on the release of a debut EP featuring her original music. She describes her blind audition as nerve-wracking because it took so long for a coach to turn around

On being on Team Adam: “Vocally, I hope he can help me expand just as a singer, just to be more powerful and put myself inside of songs even more, just really grasp the song.”

On iTunes: Just her audition song.

Update: She was matched against Lexi Davila in a battle round that was part of a montage package. They performed “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield. Adam declared Lexi the winner; Bren’nae was eliminated.
