Her background: Brynn says she was 4 years old when her mother introduced her to the Kelly Clarkson hit song “Breakaway.” She connected with the song so much, Brynn says “from that point on, I knew I wanted to keep going with this.” Before long, her family bought her a piano and she was writing her own songs. Brynn also plays lacrosse and field hockey, but says she always makes time for music “because, without it, I definitely don’t have a good day.” Her audition song was perfect, Brynn said, because the coaches would be hearing “my soul and my song” instead of seeing a 14-year-old.
What the show didn’t show:
* Brynn classifies herself as a pop-soul singer-songwriter on her Facebook page.
* She performs around the Nantucket, Mass., area and was named most likely to win a Grammy in the 2017 Nantucket Blackbook Year in Review.
* She apparently made it all the way to the blind auditions for Season 13 of The Voice but failed to turn a chair.
* In 2016, she competed for a chance to sing the national anthem at a New England Revolution home game and was one of three winners, resulting in a performance at Gillette Stadium at age 13 that’s captured on her Instagram page and YouTube channel. She says she wound up performing in front of 15,000 people that day, her biggest crowd to date.
* As for more recent performances, she says “since then, it’s been small bars and breweries and restaurants, and just anywhere I can just get a small crowd that would enjoy listening to me. So it’s so crazy that I’m here (on The Voice).”
* Her YouTube channel is packed with covers, most from age 11 forward. But two go back to when Brynn was just 4, including one labeled a “hysterical rendition of Sugarland’s ‘Stay,'” complete with jumping, finger wagging and a adorable bow at the end.
* She also has two originals posted there — “Pink Sky” and “Future of Us” — recorded when she was just 12 years old.
On picking Kelly: During a conference call with the media, Brynn said she went into her audition wanting Kelly as coach, but Blake had her wondering when he made his pitch. “Going into it, I was really hoping to turn Kelly’s chair. But Blake started talking and he made a couple of great points. But in the end I know that my 5-year-old self — that I would kick myself if I didn’t choose Kelly because I just love her so much and I am so, so happy that I did.”
