Crews Wright of American Idol Season 23

Crews Wright is among the artists who auditioned for the new season of American Idol.

Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, March 9 with Carrie Underwood joining Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan at the judges’ table.

A sneak peek will air Sunday after the Oscars.

Here’s more about Crews:

* He’s a 17-year-old Christian country artist from Samson, Ala.

* And in spite of his young age, he’s already released music.

* That’s in the form of a pair of singles — “Phone in Heaven” and ‘That’s How” — released in 2023 when he was just 15.

* Crews grew up singing in church and is a self-taught guitar player.

* While Idol will be his biggest stage yet, he’s no stranger to singing competitions.

* In 2022, he auditioned for the Southern Lights: Search for a Star competition with a cover of “Old Rugged Cross.”

* He not only made the competiion, he wound up as the winner, leading to the release of his debut single.

* The same year, he was named youth male young vocalist of the year in traditional gospel music by the North American Country Music Association International, according to his Spotify bio.

* Crews has been promoting his upcoming appearance on Idol, saying he’s been told his audition will air on the season premiere.

* “I’m 17 and being from a small town in Alabama, the odds are not in my favor and ‘American Idol’ is giving me a chance to change that and make a difference,” Crews told local ABC affiliate WDHN.

* His experience auditioning in front of the Idol judges also resulted in a cover of Lionel Richie’s “Easy Like Sunday Morning,” which you can check out below.

” Says Crews: “At the @americanidol audition they encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and try some songs in a different genre. You’ve got to admit, no matter what kind of music you like, ‘Easy Like Sunday Morning’ by @lionelrichie is a classic.”
