Fritz Hager from American Idol Season 20

American Idol returns to ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27. Here’s more about Fritz.

* He’s a singer-songwriter and graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas.

* Fritz has one song on Spotify, “Open Waters,” released in 2020, but has more on the way. Check out “Open Waters” below.

* He recently completed a successful Kickstarter, raising more than $6,500 to help fund a debut EP of four to six of the songs he’s written over the past two years.

* Fritz says the music on the EP will be a snapshot of his life during that time. “I treat songwriting as a form of therapy, so my music speaks on insecurities, love and heartache, every existential crisis that a person would struggle with in their 20s, and most importantly how to come to terms with and overcome them.”

* After high school, Fritz began attending Oklahoma City University with a double major in musical theater and vocal performance.

* He’s been heavily involved in musical theater for years, most recently posting promos for “Newsies,”
“The Addams Family Musical” and “West Side Story” (he played Tony) to his Instagram page.

* When he was a senior in high school, he was chosen as one of six finalists in the National Endowment for the Arts 2018 Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge.

* Fritz earned the honor with a song called “If I Lie Here” — about a guy asking a girl to take him back in spite of their past difficulties. It was from a 14-song musical he was writing at the time.

* In announcing his Idol audition on social media, Fritz put together a 30-second video labeled “a childhood dream came true this year.”
