Her background: Her parents are from Cuba and performed in the same band there. Her mom moved to America to pursue her musical dreams; a few years later, her dad followed in a sailboat he made himself, Genesis says. “He’s my hero, the teen says Genesis was born in the U.S. As for her own music, she says she started taking it seriously in high school when she joined a group called Band Sisters. She spent a year with that band, playing at restaurants and charity events. Now she’s a solo artist.
What the show didn’t show:
* Genesis was born and raised in Miami and typically performs as simply Genesis.
* In her Facebook bio, she says her music is highly influenced by greats such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James “mixed with the modern sounds of Shakira, Natalia Jimenez, and Beyonce.”
* Being a Latina, she also sings in Spanish and if you head to one of her YouTube accounts, you can hear a wonderfully received rendition of Hoy Quiero Confesar from 2016.
* Genesis has been working with a “boutique record label” called Top Stop Music out of Delray Beach, Fla., and is one of five artists featured on the homepage of the label’s website. She says she’s recorded some music with the label, but it hasn’t been released because she wanted to try The Voice experience.
* She performed as a representative of Top Stop at Billboard’s 2017 Latin Music Showcase in Miami. You can watch her cover of “Natural Woman” below.
* That’s the most recent video on her YouTube channel, but you can check out several more current covers on her Facebook page, including a version of Voice coach Alicia Key’s “Fallin'” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the song Chloe Kohanski covered so successfully on Season 13.
* She also covers Adele’s “A Million Years Ago” and calls Adele her favorite singer. “She inspires me to do what I love and she inspires me to keep going on this journey that I call my biggest dream,” Genesis writes.
* During a conference call with the media the day after her audition aired, Genesis said she considered “Praying” an important and powerful song to perform because of everything that’s going on regarding sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
* Post-show, Genesis told Voice Views the music she’d like to record “is really like Spanglish — English and Spanish mixed together, upbeat, the vibe of ‘Despacito,’ something like that.”
On picking Adam: “He was just so technical with what he loved about my voice,” Genesis said. “It just captivated me the way he spoke to me. I absolutely love him as a coach.”
