Samantha Novacek, Season 11

Meet Hollywood bound Samantha “Sam” Novacek

It had all the earmarks of one of those crazy auditions.

Sam Novacek of Sutersville, Pa., was about to audition on American Idol, but the camera crew wasn’t focusing on her.

They were focused on sister-in-law Patricia Bell. And more specifically, her planking.  Which apparently is a yoga position in which one lies on his or her stomach, feet slightly raised.

Even when Sam went into the audition room, Patricia tagged right along, stretching out on the front of the stage and assuming her planking position.

The good news.  It wasn’t a crazy audition at all.  Sam can sing, as she proved by performing Faith Hill’s “Like We Never Loved at All.”

As for the planking, it was all just an attempt to get the producers’ attention, Patricia admitted in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I’m just actually weird,” she told the newspaper.

Sam, or Samantha as we were introduced to her on Idol, sings mostly country music and says she was inspired to try out for Idol after a friend who shared an interest in music with her passed away in May 2011.

The 19-year-old graduated from high school in 2010 and had attended Seton Hill University, where she took voice lessons for one semester.

In her golden ticket interview, she says she was cheering — meaning a cheerleader, I presume — in high school for seven years before quitting right before senior night to audition for the school play. She wound up landing the lead.

After her audition, Jennifer praised the “guts behind” her voice. Randy praised her “very pure” sound. She wound up with a unanimous yes to advance.

“I love to have fun and incorporate that into my music,” Sam told Idol.

Apparently, she loves to have fun when she auditions, too.  For more on that wacky audition, head here.

No word on whether the planking sister-in-law advanced to Hollywood, so Sam might be on her own in Tinseltown.

Meanwhile, her are some pre-Idol videos of her performing.
