His audition: Jeremy Gaynor, 30, of West Point, N.Y., auditioned with “Superstar.” It was evident from the first note that he’s a talented singer. Christina Aguilera turned around in a heartbeat. Over the course of the song, all the other coaches followed, giving Jeremy the only four-chair turn in the fourth blind audition episode. He joined Team Christina.
His background: He’s a staff sergeant and lead male vocalist for the West Point Band. Apparently, he had tried to pursue music for a while before following a relative’s advice and joining the Army, which had been a family tradition. Jeremy told the coaches he prefers to sing R&B and pop, but his job requires him to be able to handle all types of music. And while he said he “loves being in the West Point band,” he’s pushing harder toward a music career outside the Army because his wife is pregnant with their first child. He met her in church, where he sang before enlisting.
What the show didn’t show: When he joined the Army, he said he became part of the Army Entertainment Detachment. For three years, he worked in the background, “doing production as the stage production manager.” For a while, he says he “got lost in being a background guy, being a behind-the-scenes guy and pushing other artists to the forefront.” Then the lead vocalist position opened up with the West Point Band. Jeremy said he was “a little timid to audition” at first, but eventually decided to submit a DVD application. He was one of four guys selected to compete for the position and, of course, landed it. He feels like that’s prepared him for a competition like The Voice. In fact, he says he was singing the national anthem at the same location — MetLife Stadium — that The Voice auditions were being held. “I was actually encouraged by my current command to audition for The Voice to tell the Army story and, at the same time, go for my dream as well.” Oh, since the blind audition, his wife has given birth to a baby girl.
On picking Christina: “First of all, no female coach has won The Voice, so I’m kind of looking to bring that home. But at the same time, Christina spoke to me. I think there are a lot of things I can learn from her.” He said he also appreciated the fact that she turned around early in his performance.
On iTunes: Just his Voice audition song.
Update: In the battle round, he was matched against Rob Taylor. They sang “Animals” by Maroon 5. Christina declared Rob the winner; Jeremy was eliminated from the show.
