Juliet Simms, Season Two Contestants, The Voice

Meet Juliet Simms of The Voice (Team Cee Lo)

5

She’s just 25, and Juliet Simms is more experienced than many of the contestants on Season 2 of The Voice.

Of course, getting an early start helps. Juliet told The Voice she was singing in coffee houses at age 13, and started touring across the country, “living the gypsy life” at age 16.

Blame the indie rocker’s musical inspirations on her parents.

“My parents were hippie, surfer rockers,” she says. “So I grew up listening to classic rock.”

She wound up fronting a band called Automatic Loveletter that has been pretty prolific, releasing a debut EP in 2007 (“Recover”), a self-titled EP in 2009, an album in 2010 (“Truth or Dare”) and another last year (“The Kids Will Take Their Monster On”). All four are available on iTunes.

The latter is mostly acoustic and a step back to her roots, Juliet explains in a video interview, describing “Truth or Dare” as “very poppy” and “very major label fingerprinted,” the result of “so many cooks” and “too many kitchens.”

After all, Automatic Loveletter started with her writing acoustic love songs — love letters to ex-boyfriends is the way she describes it on her Facebook bio. As for the other half of the band’s name: “I want the reaction to be automatic when the songs come through the stereo speakers.”

On The Voice, Juliet auditioned with “Oh, Darling,” which she describes as one of her favorite Beatles songs. Her version convinced everyone but Blake Shelton to turn his chair around, and Juliet opted to join Team Cee Lo.

She then earned a spot in the live round by outsinging Sarah Golden on “Stay With Me” in the battle rounds.

Juliet, of course, is hoping for a career boost from The Voice, admitting “this is all I’ve done my entire life. It’s all I know how to do.”
