Her audition: Siahna Im, 15, of Auburn, Wash., auditioned with “Fever,” adding all sorts of little frills to make the song her own. Gwen Stefani turned around in a heartbeat; Pharrell Williams and Blake Shelton followed. Pharrell called her “fresh, new and different.” Siahna decided to join Team Pharrell.
Her background: Siahna began her pre-audition interview by explaining how different her parents are. She says her mom is a math teacher. “So when I get an 80 percent on a test, she says, ‘You have to retake that test.’ My dad is the exact opposite of my mom. He’s one crazy person … Like my dad, I’m a weird person. Being normal would be boring.” She got hooked on singing in third grade, when she watched a video of Ray Charles singing and decided she wanted to sing soul music. “Some music comes in one ear and goes out the other, but I feel soul music goes in one ear and goes straight to your heart,” she says. Back home, she sings at open mics and cafes and says she’s looking forward to what she could learn from a superstar coach on The Voice.
What the show didn’t show: Her father is a pilot and Sianha has had an opportunity to travel all over the world with her father and mother, according to The Voice website. Her website bio says she started singing at age 3, always had an outgoing personality and would watch the Grammys in awe, dreaming she’d be on that stage one day.
Though introduced to soul music in third grade, that bio indicates she really got serious about music at age 13, when she started to write her own songs and began performing at open mics. She’s performed in front of audiences from Shanghai to Los Angeles, her bio says.
“Fever” is a pretty mature song for a 15-year-old, but Siahna says she did what she does when she’s writing her original music. “I’ve always tried to write my own songs but I’m only 15 years old, so I haven’t had much of life experience,” she said in a conference call with the media. “But just I tried to put myself in other people’s shoes and tried to tell different stories. And just like for preparing to be on the show, I did just that. I put myself in someone else’s shoes and tried to tell their story on the stage.”
