Sophie Dorsten of American Idol Season 24
Idol returns to ABC on Monday, Jan. 26 with the judging trio of Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood and Lionel Richie.
Here’s more about Sophie:
* She’s a 23-year-old singer based in Phoenix, Arizona, who auditioned for the judges accompanied by her brother Alex.
* Which was certainly appropriate, because together, they make up the pop-folk duo Dorsten. And they’ve released lots of music together.
* That includes a bunch of singles back to 2020, an EP called “To the River” in 2024, and three singles in 2025 — “Hush,” “Porcelain Heart” and “Tangerine.” Folks, this duo has released lots of great music worth checking out. And “Porcelain Heart” is a wonderful vocal showcase for Sophie.
* On their website, the duo describe their sounds as the vibe and nuance of Noah Kahan and the vocal power of Adele.
* And they list their major influences as Florence + The Machine, The Lumineers and Kaleo.
* The band has toured the Pacific Northwest and the Southwestern U.S. They’ve also traveled to England to perform, recorded at Abbey Road and released a six-song London Sessions EP in 2023.
* And Sophie’s not afraid to put her life on the line for her music … well, sorta. The duo filmed the music video to “A Smile Like Mine” at the Mogollon Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona. “This video was really filmed live at the edge of a cliff,” Alex writes. “Sophie was very freaked the entire time.” Check out the music video — and the excellent song — below.
* In an interview with Canvas Rebel, Sophie said she decided she wanted to be a musician when she was 9 and would watch her two older brothers perform in a school band. She eventually joined them as Sophie & the Boyz.
* At 13, she competed in the Alice Cooper Solid Rock ‘Proof is in the Pudding’ competition. She’s since taught vocals at the Solid Rock teen center and had an opportunity to sing backup for Alice. In 2023, Dorsten released a cover of Cooper’s “I Never Cry” as a tribute.
* Sophie announced her Idol audition in mid-November. “It has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl watching every season growing up!” she writes. “My mom would always say, ‘Just wait till we get to go!!'”
